Sean Parkinson is seventeen years old has been training with Evolve Military College at our Bury campus since February. He originally from Moss Side in Manchester and now lives in Salford. Sean is currently continuing his studies with Evolve during lockdown.

Why do you want to join the military? It’s always been my dream to join the military. When I was younger, I grew up in an area where there was lots of crime and so I saw first hand what can happen to young people who live a life without direction. I wanted to make sure this didn’t happen to me and I knew that the military would give me the direction I needed.
What do you want to do in the forces? I dream of joining the Parachute regiment as a paratrooper. I want to be the best version of myself and to do this you have to be part of the elite – and I know I will achieve this through the paras.
How have you found the course so far? It’s been fantastic! It really does prepare you for all aspects of basic training and I know having this foundation will put all the learners a huge step ahead of everyone else on the course.
What have been the best bits of the course? In truth, I’ve loved every element of the course. I’ve really enjoyed the fitness which has been incredibly tough, but there is a real sense of achievement after a session. The highlights have been meeting new people. The other students are extremely supportive, and I’ve made some friends for life. There are no separate groups or cliques – we are all one big group of mates.

The centre is currently closed due to Covid-19. How has this affected your learning? I have to say, the staff have been helpful beyond description in keeping us all on track. They have sent us work booklets and set us tasks to complete each day. There are also fitness sessions to complete each day. They are working so hard to make sure we don’t let our standards slip.
The staff are in regular contact and if we are struggling with anything, there is always someone to offer support – and that goes for the other learners too. I think in the circumstances, we’ve all adapted fairly easily to home learning. That said, I can’t wait to get back to the centre!
Anything else? I just want to say to anyone who wants to improve themselves ahead of joining the military, joining Evolve is the best possible thing you can do beforehand.
