The French Connection for Nutters
Nutters is a modern British restaurant yet with classical French influences. Due to Andrew Nutter’s passion for French cooking, it began life under the brand French Connection.
THE JOURNEY STARTS
At just 21, and with the backing of his family, Andrew launched his new restaurant on the former site of the New Inn pub between Norden and Edenfield. Along with Andrew’s television work, the restaurant went from strength to strength. However, after two years it was decided to rename the restaurant Nutters.
THE MOVE TO WOLSTENHOLME MANOR
After ten very successful years at the original site, the building was almost bursting at the seams. In order to accommodate the restaurant’s growing needs, several attempts were made to obtain planning permission for an extension. But this proved impossible and in the end a choice was becoming increasingly obvious; either to open a second restaurant or relocate altogether to somewhere larger. Fortunately, fate stepped in to provide the perfect answer…
WINTER 2003
During a winter’s evening in 2003, Andrew’s father Rodney began a conversation with a restaurant customer who turned out to be the area director for the Whitbread Group. And when Rodney mentioned The Manor – a Whitbread property around a mile further along the Norden to Edenfield road – he was told that this building was due to be sold, and that offers for the property were closing at 12 noon the following day.
NEW BEGINNINGS
So the very next morning, Rodney Nutter put in an offer for the historic-yet-almost-derelict Wolstenholme Hall. With nothing more than a gentlemen’s handshake the deal was done. Thus, only a fortnight later, Nutters Restaurant was relocated to the building it proudly sits in today.
BEAUTIFUL & HISTORIC SURROUNDINGS
The move shocked a few people, but most were thrilled by the new location. With its six and a half acres of groomed park land, panoramic views, gothic arches and sumptuous surroundings, the new venue provided a perfect backdrop for Nutters fine cuisine.
THE AWARDS KEEP COMING
Within a year of the move, Nutters had won the Restaurant of the Year, had been rated in the AA’s Notable Wine List top 100, and voted by The Times as one of the top ten celebrity-chef restaurants in the UK.
THE PERFECT WEDDING VENUE
A year later, the Ashworth Suite and the Joseph Perrier Champagne Suite were launched, providing the perfect venue for civil weddings, cocktail parties and lavish receptions – for up to 120 people. The two suites each have a private entrance and patio overlooking Ashworth Moor. On a clear day, one can enjoy views right across to the centre of Manchester and beyond that to Cheshire’s giant Jodrell Bank radio dish.

WORD OF MOUTH
Nutters Restaurant has never advertised itself; word-of-mouth and hard work alone have allowed the restaurant to be the the success it is today.
NUTTERS – A FAMILY AFFAIR
Despite the success of Nutters it has remained a family affair. Rodney Nutter – Andrew’s father and a successful butcher originally based in Prestwich – retired from his business to look after the restaurant’s enviable reputation for fine wines. Andrew’s mother Jean joined the team too. As an ex home-economics teacher – and perhaps one of the first to teach cookery to boys – Jean has brought her expertise and wisdom to the restaurant and now looks after the accounts and administration.
