Students from Carlton Digby School in Nottingham were recently given an insight into the working world thanks to a visit to St. Modwen Park Derby.
More than 20 students from the school, which provides high-quality education for learners with a wide range of special educational needs and disabilities aged between 3-18 years, visited the 54,000 sq ft St. Modwen Logistics warehouse and took part in a range of activities designed to help them understand the types of businesses and operations that would be likely occupy this type of unit.
Following a series of short talks from St. Modwen development staff, students were given a tour of the facility and even held an impromptu race before settling into the task of taking what they had learned from the day to design their own buildings using a variety of different materials.
The visit was arranged ahead of Open Doors Week – an initiative aimed at allowing people to go behind the site hoardings to understand the range of careers available across the construction industry – and was designed to encourage the children to gain insight into how a joint warehouse and office facility works and how it is built, as well as engaging them with a possible career path which could be an option for them once they leave the education system.
